Disclosure. openProd publishes this page, and openProd is one of the two tools compared. Akeneo Supplier Data Manager is described with what Akeneo states on its own product page, documentation, app listing and one-pager, with a link to each source. Checked on 13 October 2026, Gartner update added on 19 October 2026. If something has changed, tell us and we will update the page.
The short answer. Akeneo Supplier Data Manager (SDM) fits when your suppliers will log in to a portal and work against your template, and when you run Akeneo or want one onboarding tool that also feeds an ERP or pricing system. openProd fits when suppliers keep sending their own PDFs and spreadsheets, your team does the intake, and the data has to land in Pimcore or Ergonode. For some teams on Akeneo, either could work.
Two ways to get supplier data in
Every catalogue team receives product data from suppliers. The real question is who shapes that data into your model, and when.
With a supplier portal, the supplier does part of the work. They log in, see your required attributes and fill or upload against your template. Validation catches gaps before the data reaches your team.
With an onboarding layer, the supplier sends what they already have: a PDF data sheet, a price list, an email. Your team drops the file in, AI reads it and maps the values to your model, and a person decides what is uncertain.
SDM is built around the first way, with AI to help along the route. openProd is built around the second. Both aim at the same result: checked data in the systems you run.
What Akeneo Supplier Data Manager is
Akeneo Supplier Data Manager is Akeneo’s tool for collecting product data from suppliers. Akeneo describes it as part of Akeneo Product Cloud and “also available as a standalone solution”, and its FAQ says plainly: “No Akeneo PIM is needed.” The page addresses distributors and their suppliers, and procurement, marketing and e-commerce teams.
Update, 19 October 2026: On 15 October 2026 Akeneo announced that Gartner named it a Leader in the 2026 Magic Quadrant for Product Information Management Solutions. The release describes Akeneo Product Cloud as bringing together PIM, supplier data onboarding, digital asset management, product activation and product experience intelligence. It does not mention reading product values from PDF files, so the PDF point below still stands.
Portal, templates and files
SDM gives suppliers a web portal. You share templates and data guidelines, and set the level of collaboration per supplier through rights and permissions. In the portal, suppliers can complete required attributes, upload images and documents, and fix validation errors as they appear. SDM imports structured files (“xls, csv, xml and else”) with their assets.
Since March 2026, suppliers can also start a job by emailing a CSV or Excel file to the portal address. Akeneo’s changelog marks this as beta.
The FAQ adds that SDM “can be used with external users or solely internally”. A team whose suppliers will not collaborate can run the onboarding itself.
Validation and approvals
You expose your data requirements (from the PIM, the ERP or elsewhere) in the SDM interface. Required attributes and validation rules check submissions for completeness, flag errors in real time and can stop non-compliant data from being submitted. Submissions then go through approval workflows. Akeneo describes the goal as better data quality “at the source”.
AI in SDM
- Classification into your families and categories.
- Enrichment and correction: attributes filled from descriptions, titles and labels, and correction “with AI or rules”.
- Extraction: the Extraction module fills missing attributes by analysing chosen text fields and image assets of the media type. When the AI’s confidence is low, the attribute is flagged for manual review, and AI-filled values carry a bot icon.
- Mapping suggestions (March 2026): AI proposes matches between source columns and unmapped target attributes, with confidence scores. A refreshed mapping step from January 2026 is marked beta, and so is the AI Assistant in the interface, available since July 2025.
In the package comparison on the SDM page (Growth and Advanced), Classification, Extraction and an “AI power-up” are listed as add-ons, so check which AI features your package includes. The Akeneo App Store listing gives the price as quote based.
Reading product values from a supplier’s PDF data sheet is not stated on SDM’s pages. In the documentation, PDFs appear as assets.
Where SDM data lands
SDM syncs with “your PIM, ERP, pricing system or any other product record”. It pushes to the systems it is connected to, or generates product files to import. The one-pager describes three uses: marketing and technical data for a PIM, procurement and assortment data for an ERP, and price lists for pricing software. The App Store listing names the Akeneo PIM packages Growth, Advanced and Premium. A Pimcore or Ergonode connector is not named on its pages.
What openProd is
openProd is an AI onboarding layer in front of your PIM. Suppliers do not log in: your team uploads the files they send (PDF data sheets with specification tables, price lists, update spreadsheets) or pastes text from an email.
openProd maps each value to your own model: your attributes, units and dictionary codes. A weight read as 0.09 kg is saved as 90 when the attribute expects grams, and “Stainless steel” becomes stainless_steel when that is your code. Every value keeps a link to the place it was read (Show in source). Clear values go straight through; conversions and values without an attribute wait for a person in Data review. A preview separates new products from updates, nothing is written until someone clicks Save to catalog, and every product change is recorded. See AI import.
Where openProd data lands
- Pimcore: a connector job reads your classes and fields first and asks when a mapping needs a business decision. A product counts as synchronized once the result is verified in Pimcore. Listed in the Pimcore Store; LemonMind, the team behind openProd, is a Pimcore Platinum Partner. Details in supplier data onboarding for Pimcore.
- Ergonode: the connector reads your Ergonode model and sends only values that have a place in it. Features Ergonode does not know yet are listed with their products, and someone with the right permission decides. Details in supplier data onboarding for Ergonode.
- Akeneo and other systems: the connection is agreed with your team and tested in a pilot, depending on edition and setup. See Akeneo.
Where the two really differ
Who shapes the data
SDM moves the work towards the supplier. Your template and rules sit in front of them, and errors are flagged while they submit. When suppliers take part, much of the checking happens before your team opens the data.
openProd keeps the work with your team. The supplier changes nothing. AI reads the file and maps values to your model, and a person decides on conversions and unmatched values with the source next to them.
What files fit
SDM’s stated imports are structured files (XLS, CSV, XML) with assets, plus portal entry and, in beta, CSV or Excel by email. Its extraction works on text fields and image assets. openProd reads supplier PDFs with specification tables, spreadsheets and pasted text.
Where data lands
SDM feeds Akeneo PIM and, by Akeneo’s own description, other PIMs, ERPs and pricing systems through connections or import files. openProd hands data to Pimcore and Ergonode through its own connectors, and to Akeneo through a connection tested in a pilot.
Side by side
| Question | Akeneo SDM (as stated) | openProd |
|---|---|---|
| Who enters the data | Suppliers in a portal, or your team internally | Your team; suppliers do not log in |
| Files in | XLS, CSV, XML with assets; CSV or Excel by email (beta) | Supplier PDFs, spreadsheets, pasted text |
| Checks before data moves on | Validation rules, approval workflows, low-confidence AI values flagged | Data review of conversions and unmatched values, preview, Save to catalog |
| Source per value | Not stated | Yes, Show in source |
| Where data lands | Akeneo PIM, or another PIM, ERP or pricing system | Pimcore and Ergonode by connector; Akeneo by agreed connection |
When to choose which
Choose Akeneo Supplier Data Manager when
- Your suppliers accept a portal and your template, or you are in a position to require it.
- You run Akeneo PIM or plan to, and want onboarding inside the same product family.
- You want validation and approvals at the moment of submission.
- One onboarding tool should also feed an ERP or pricing system.
- Most supplier data arrives as structured spreadsheets or XML.
Choose openProd when
- Suppliers send their own PDFs and spreadsheets and will not change how they work.
- You run Pimcore or Ergonode and want values to land on your existing model through a connector.
- You want every value traceable to its place in the source file, and a person to decide on uncertain conversions before anything is written.
When both could work
- You run Akeneo and your team does the intake. SDM can be used internally, and openProd connects to Akeneo through a connection agreed and tested in a pilot. Compare them on your own files.
- Your supplier base is mixed. Large suppliers may accept a portal while the long tail keeps emailing PDFs. Some teams handle the two groups with different tools. That is a choice about process, not an integration between these two products.
How to decide on your own files
Bring the same three real files to both demos: a supplier PDF data sheet, a spreadsheet with the supplier’s own column names, and an email with product details. Then check:
- Who does the work for each file: the supplier, your team or the tool?
- Do values land on your attributes, units and option codes?
- Can you open the place in the file where a value came from?
- What happens to values your model has no attribute for?
- What exactly is written to your PIM, and when?
In an openProd demo, one of your supplier files goes through reading, mapping and review. For the wider market, see our comparison of supplier product data onboarding tools.
